Why shouldn't I just leave my bitcoin on an exchange?

This puts you in control of your private keys – and your bitcoin.

What is the difference between "self-custody" and "custodial" wallets?

The difference is who holds the keys to your bitcoin. Self-custody: This is true ownership of bitcoin; the way bitcoin was meant to be used. Pro: No one can ever freeze your account, seize your funds, or stop a transaction. You have complete control of your private keys – and your bitcoin. Con: You are fully responsible for your bitcoin's security. If you lose your recovery phrase, no one can help you get your coins back. Custodial: You are entrusting a 3rd party (custodian) to hold your bitcoin for you. Pro: Sometimes easier to use; if you lose your password, your custodian can sometimes help you recover your account. Con: You don't fully own the bitcoin. If the company goes bankrupt, gets hacked, or freezes your account, you could lose access to your coins. In summary, self-custody is the safest and most private way to own bitcoin, while custodial wallets are a riskier option that give up control of your funds. We always recommend self-custody.

The main risk is that because they are connected to the internet ("hot"), they are theoretically vulnerable to malware, phone theft, etc. We recommend keeping significant amounts of bitcoin in a hardware wallet and using mobile wallets for spending / everyday use.

However, as your investment grows to significant amounts that you plan to save for years, upgrading to a hardware wallet (cold storage) is highly recommended for enhanced security.

What happens if I lose my phone or break my hardware wallet?

You will not lose your bitcoin if you have your seed phrase (often 12 or 24 words). Your actual bitcoin is stored on the blockchain, not inside the device itself. As long as you have your backup seed phrase written down safely, you can "restore" your wallet on a completely new phone or device in minutes.

Yes, absolutely. You are never "locked in" to a specific wallet provider. Because bitcoin uses open standards, you can easily send your funds from your old wallet to a new one at any time.
