Where your bitcoin is held

This is the biggest difference between the two. Newton holds your bitcoin for you until you request a withdrawal. Bitcoin Well sends it directly to a wallet you control as part of every purchase.

Newton

Held for you in your Newton account

  • At least 80% of client crypto is in cold storage with Coinbase Custody and BitGo. Up to 20% sits in hot wallets secured by Fireblocks.
  • You can ask to withdraw. Newton’s terms let it place a hold that blocks a withdrawal, and they reserve the right not to facilitate a transfer without giving a reason.
Bitcoin Well

Delivered to your own wallet

  • Every purchase is delivered to a self-custody wallet you control, by Lightning or on-chain.
  • Bitcoin Well doesn’t hold customer bitcoin after a purchase.
  • You’re responsible for your wallet, keys and seed phrase. Bitcoin Well can’t recover lost keys.
  • You’ll need a bitcoin wallet before you buy.

Bitcoin Well never holds your bitcoin; it sends it directly to your wallet after every purchase.

What Newton’s agreement says about a withdrawal

You can ask Newton to send bitcoin to your own wallet. This is what their agreement says about that request.

Funding and withdrawing fiat funds

We further reserve the right to not facilitate the sale or transfer of your Digital Assets via our Service without providing you any reason, justification or cause.

Holds on withdrawals of platform currencies and fiat funds

While the Canadian dollar balance of your Account may display immediately or soon after you initiate a deposit on the Service, it typically takes 5-10 business days, but sometimes longer, for us to confirm receipt of your Canadian dollar deposit with our own financial institutions.

For some Account holders, we permit you to immediately buy Digital Assets using the funds we anticipate receiving from you, even though we have not yet confirmed receipt of your Canadian dollar deposit. For that reason, even though your Digital Assets purchased will be displayed in your Account and delivered to a Custodian, we place holds on, and we will not execute any instructions to withdraw the Digital Assets from the Custodian until we confirm your Canadian dollar deposit.

Newton may refuse a transfer without giving a reason, and it will not send a withdrawal to the custodian until it confirms your Canadian-dollar deposit, which typically takes 5 to 10 business days and sometimes longer.

The same terms say you own the bitcoin and that Newton does not loan it.

Bitcoin Well never holds your bitcoin; it sends it directly to your wallet after every purchase.

Bitcoin Well Canada: Terms of Service

Fees and pricing

Newton charges a trading fee. Bitcoin Well publishes one spread.

Newton

A trading fee, with a high-volume schedule

  • Bitcoin, ETH and USDC are 1.00% to 1.15%. Signature pricing can fall to 0.05% at the highest tier.
  • Funding and withdrawing Canadian dollars has no platform fee. The fiat rails are Interac e-Transfer, wire and pre-authorized debit.
  • Staking is available for ETH, SOL and ADA. Newton takes a fee from the rewards, and staked assets can’t be withdrawn until you unstake them.
Bitcoin Well

A fixed spread

  • Verified Accounts: 1.5% spread to buy, 2.0% to sell.
  • Lite Accounts: pay a 4% spread to buy or sell.
  • There are no withdrawal fees, account fees or hidden fees. Faster on-chain delivery may include a small network fee.

Newton’s standard bitcoin fee, 1.00% to 1.15%, can sit below Bitcoin Well’s 1.5% buy spread, but Newton requires a separate withdrawal to your own wallet.

Identity verification and privacy

Both platforms must follow Canada’s anti-money-laundering rules. The difference is how much you share to get started.

Newton

Photo ID and required MFA

  • Newton checks a government photo ID through Persona, for its FINTRAC obligations.
  • Multi-factor authentication is required. SMS is no longer supported. You use an authenticator app, a security key, or biometrics.
Bitcoin Well

Full or Lite

  • Lite Accounts need only an email address and work with Cash Vouchers.
  • Verified Accounts need to verify their identity via SumSub.
  • Bitcoin Well doesn’t sell personal information.

Bitcoin Well’s Lite Account requires the least amount of personal information. Both companies ask for ID verification when the law requires it.

Regulation and oversight

The two platforms are regulated under different regimes.

Newton

  • Newton Crypto Ltd. became a CIRO dealer member on March 18, 2026, and is a registered investment dealer.
  • It’s also a FINTRAC-registered money services business.

Newton

  • Accounts require an authenticator app, a security key, or biometrics. SMS codes are no longer accepted.
