Where your bitcoin is held

This is the biggest difference between the two. Coinbase holds your bitcoin in a hosted wallet until you send it out. Bitcoin Well sends it directly to a wallet you control as part of every purchase.

Coinbase

Held for you in a Coinbase wallet

  • Coinbase controls the private keys for crypto in the hosted wallet. The agreement says the assets stay yours and aren’t loaned out.
  • A send can wait until the cash you used to buy has settled, usually one business day. Coinbase may also hold or refuse a transfer.
Bitcoin Well

Delivered to your own wallet

  • Every purchase is delivered to a self-custody wallet you control, by Lightning or on-chain.
  • Bitcoin Well doesn’t hold customer bitcoin after a purchase.
  • You’re responsible for your wallet, keys and seed phrase. Bitcoin Well can’t recover lost keys.
  • You’ll need a bitcoin wallet before you buy.

Bitcoin Well never holds your bitcoin; it sends it directly to your wallet after every purchase.

What Coinbase’s agreement says about a withdrawal

You can ask Coinbase to send bitcoin to your own wallet. This is what their agreement says about that request.

Section 5.1

You may not be able to send Supported Digital Assets off the Coinbase Platform until the funds for the purchase of the Supported Digital Asset have settled to Coinbase, which in the case of fiat is usually one Business Day after we receive your instructions.

Section 7.1

We may: (a) refuse to complete, or place on hold, block, cancel, correct, clawback or reverse a transaction you have authorized (even after funds have been debited from your Coinbase Account) with immediate effect in our sole discretion, even after funds have been debited from your account(s), in response to a subpoena, court order, or other government order; or if we suspect the transaction may: involve money laundering, terrorist financing, fraud, or any other type of financial crime; be erroneous; or relate to a Prohibited Use or a Prohibited Business as set forth in the Prohibited Use Policy. In such instances, Coinbase will reverse the transaction and we are under no obligation to reinstate a purchase or sale order at the same price or on the same terms as the cancelled transaction.

We may also refuse to complete or block, cancel or reverse a transaction you have authorized where there is insufficient fiat in your Fiat Wallet and / or insufficient Digital Assets in your Digital Asset Wallet to cover the transaction and (where applicable) associated fees at the time that we receive notification of the transaction or if your credit or debit card or any other valid payment method linked to your Coinbase Account or Digital Asset Wallet is declined.

Coinbase may suspend, restrict, or terminate your access to any or all of the Coinbase Services, and/or deactivate or cancel your Coinbase Account(s), with immediate effect for any reason at its sole discretion and is under no obligation to disclose the details of its decision to take such action with you.

A send can wait until the cash you used to buy has settled, usually one business day, and Coinbase may hold, block or reverse the transfer without telling you why.

The same agreement says title to the bitcoin stays with you and that it may not be loaned to Coinbase.

Bitcoin Well never holds your bitcoin; it sends it directly to your wallet after every purchase.

Bitcoin Well Canada: Terms of Service

Fees and pricing

Coinbase shows a fee and a spread before you confirm. Bitcoin Well publishes one spread.

Coinbase

A fee plus a spread, shown before you buy

  • Simple buys include a trading fee and a spread. Both are shown before you confirm, and both can change with the payment method and the market.
  • Advanced Trade uses maker and taker tiers that depend on the account. Coinbase doesn’t publish one Canadian rate for every account.
  • Staking takes a commission from the rewards. USDC rewards, when they’re offered, use the rate shown in your account.
Bitcoin Well

A fixed spread

  • Verified Accounts: 1.5% spread to buy, 2.0% to sell.
  • Lite Accounts: pay a 4% spread to buy or sell.
  • There are no withdrawal fees, account fees or hidden fees. Faster on-chain delivery may include a small network fee.

Coinbase doesn’t publish one number you can set next to Bitcoin Well’s 1.5% verified buy spread.

Identity verification and privacy

Both platforms must follow Canada’s anti-money-laundering rules. The difference is how much you share to get started.

Coinbase

Full verification, plus an appropriateness check

  • Coinbase asks for your identity details and can require a photo ID, a phone number and more documents.
  • Canadian onboarding includes an account appropriateness assessment. Staking needs its own questionnaire, repeated about once a year.
Bitcoin Well

Full or Lite

  • Lite Accounts need only an email address and work with Cash Vouchers.
  • Verified Accounts need to verify their identity via SumSub.
  • Bitcoin Well doesn’t sell personal information.

Bitcoin Well’s Lite Account requires the least amount of personal information. Both companies ask for ID verification when the law requires it.

Regulation and oversight

The two platforms are regulated under different regimes.

Coinbase

A restricted dealer, working toward CIRO

  • Coinbase Canada, Inc. is a Restricted Dealer in every province and territory, and a FINTRAC-registered money services business (M22815925).
  • It isn’t a CIRO member. An April 1, 2026 OSC decision says it is still completing that membership.
  • Crypto in a Coinbase account isn’t protected by CIPF or CDIC.
Bitcoin Well

A registered money services business

  • Bitcoin Well Canada Ltd. is a FINTRAC-registered money services business (#M19811620) and is registered with Revenu Québec (#11314).
  • It’s registered with the Bank of Canada as a payment service provider under the Retail Payment Activities Act.
  • Its parent, Bitcoin Well Inc., is publicly traded on the TSX Venture Exchange (BTCW), so its financial statements are public.

Both companies publish financial statements: Coinbase on Nasdaq, and Bitcoin Well on the TSX Venture Exchange. Coinbase’s restricted-dealer registration is securities oversight.

Security and track record

Security looks different when you hold your own bitcoin. Here’s what each company discloses.

Coinbase

Coinbase holds the keys

  • Private keys for the hosted wallet are stored online and offline. Security checks can delay a transfer.
  • Crime insurance may cover some theft from Coinbase’s own systems. Coinbase says recoveries may not cover every loss, and the policy doesn’t cover a password you lost.
Bitcoin Well

No customer bitcoin held

  • Bitcoin you buy is delivered to your own wallet.
  • Bitcoin Well does not hold any customer bitcoin.
